Casual workers

Unread postby Hennie » 30 Nov 2010, 09:07

Hi there,

Are the basic conditions of employment applicable to casual workers?

Also, should there be contracts for casual workers as well?

Hours of work, lunches and overtime, is this applicable?

Where can I read more about it?

Thanking you in adavance.

Casual employees are those employees who work less than 24 hours per month. Chapter 2 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act does not apply to these employees. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act can be downloaded from the Labour Guide website.

Thanks, Nicolene.

So, in other words, if any person works more than 24 hrs per month, they do not qualify as casual workers, and therefor would need a contract, right?

Yes. But I would give an agreement to casual workers as well - just to make sure that they do not claim that they were under the impression that they were NOT casual workers.
