Man up safety cage

Unread post by pregap » 10 Sep 2010, 06:50

I need to purchase a Man up safety cage for use in a warehouse but I am getting differing opinions on regulations.
The supplier advises that all I need is a Dept of Mapower/Labour approved cage. A safety consultant advises that the cage must have an LHE number. Suppliers do not agree.
Anyone have the correct info on this?
Thanks

Good morning the requirement from the Driven Machinery Regulation 8. states that the cage must be approved by the inspector (department of labour).

Thus it does not matter what the manufacturer says the cage must be approved by labour, the only prove will be a (written approval) document from them.

I see in the new draft to the driven machinery regulation the cage must be designed according to an approved SANS standard and that a risk assesment must be done!

Tinus,do you know if an "approved SANS standard" is available yet for this cage as our company received a prohibition notice in terms of sect30 of the OHS Act for using a cage after an accident at our workplace where someone died last year as a result of a forklift accident?

Hi Tinus.

Is the SANS standard regarding man-cages approved yet? And what is the number?

After three calls and seven people at the department they believe it does not fall under there jurisdiction.

Greetings.
