Storage of Flammable Liquids

Unread post by Carmelita » 16 Apr 2018, 14:22

Good day,

I have a few questions about the storage of flammable liquids that I hope someone can assist me with. It basically boils down to the requirements of the GSR and SANS 54470 with regards to storage of flammable liquids. Can one be compliant to the GSR without buying a SANS 54470 compliant cabinet (these are on the market) and is that enough?

#1: GSR 1986 (9)(b)
(9) With respect to any room, cabinet or enclosure contemplated in subregulation (2), the employer concerned shall cause -
(b) only that quantity of flammable liquid needed for work on one day to be taken into or kept in such room, cabinet or enclosure: Provided that partially consumed stock may be stored in a properly marked fireproof wall cabinet inside the work place;

Question: Are there specific volumes which may be kept in the flammable cabinet? And if we surpass this amount, would we need a separate flammable store room?

#2: SANS 54470-1:2017
Does this standard apply to all flammable cabinets or only when certain volumes are stored?

Thank you for your help. I hope that my questions make sense!

Good morning

Yes, it would be applicable the storage of flammable liquids.

SANS 54470-1:2017 would be applicable to Fire safety cabinets.

Your cabinet needs to comply with the abovementioned standards.

You would also need to comply with the prescriptions of the GSR.
