Occupational health practitioner

Unread post by deonn » 07 Feb 2018, 12:10

Good Morning,

Some Information - We are in the Smelter Industry.

I would like advice on the following OHSAS opportunity for improvement that were listed for us to seek advice on the following (OFI):
" The organization could satisfy itself that it is complying to the following legislation regarding the qualification and registration of the occupational medicine practitioner:
• Noise-induced hearing loss regulation 1 (Definitions – “Competent person”)
• Noise-induced hearing loss regulation 7(1)(c)
• OH&S Act Section 1 (Definitions – (Occupational Medical Practitioner”)"

The following documented proof were provide a copy of registration Health Professions Council of South Africa. The service provider provided us with the certificate of registration to certify that the provisional holds the required qualifications (i.e DOH amongst other qualifications), however the certificate indicate that he/she is registered as a medical practitioner and not as a occupational medicine practitioner.

The definition in the Occupational Health and Safety Act - "occupational health practitioner" means an occupational medicine practitioner or a person who holds a qualification in occupational health recognized as such by the South African Medical and Dental Council as referred to in the Medical, Dental and Supplementary Health Service Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974), or the South African Nursing Council as referred to in the Nursing Act, 1978 (Act No. 50 of 1978);

The question is do we comply or not?

Kind regards
Deon Nell
SHQ Supt.
