Fire extinguishers in company vehicles

Unread post by Mc Safe » 29 Apr 2015, 09:00

Hi there.

Please can you advise as to what the law states (if any) regarding fire extinguishers in company vehicles.

One of our employees were pulled over in Cape Town whilst driving an Iveco Daily and was informed that due to the fact that the was no fire extinguisher in the vehicle the company could be fined R1000.00.

Our fleet consists of Iveco Dailys, Nissan NV350, Kia 2500 and Isuzu flat beds (if this helps or makes a difference in any way).

Thank you.

Not a OHS Act presciption, might be a Road Trafic Act presciption.

FYI

Please see an extract from the Road Traffic Act, Regulation 260 regarding Fire Extinguishers in a vehicle:

" Reg 260. (1) Every mini-bus operating for reward shall carry in a readily accessible position at least one fire extinguisher which shall be of—
(a) the dry powder type with a capacity of at least one kilogram; or
(b) the halogenated hydrocarbon type (BCF) with a capacity of at least one kilogram, and which shall be in good working order.

(2) Every bus operating for reward shall carry in a readily accessible position at least one fire extinguisher which shall be of—
(a) the dry powder type with a capacity of at least two and a half kilograms; or
(b) the halogenated hydrocarbon type (BCF) with a capacity of at least one kilogram, and which shall be in good working order".

It is also compulsory to fit a Fire Extinguisher to all vehicles carrying dangerous goods.
